Group Therapy
HOW GROUP SUPPORTS GROWTH AND HEALING
THE POWER OF HEALING TOGETHER
Joining a group is another step a person can take toward supporting their healing and growth. It can feel little off-putting at first but actually feels really good when one realizes that they don’t have to navigate therapy alone.
Group therapy makes our struggles shared as we both help and allow ourselves to be helped by the collective of the group. This takes place in a safe and confidential environment, facilitated by a skilled therapist, with peers to relate to. Group is a shared experience that reduces feelings of isolation, replaces feelings of loneliness with deep connection, validation, and a sense of belonging.
Research in Neuroscience concludes that group participation alters and retrains the deep neurological pathways that govern perception, experience, and our capacity for creative expression and relationship.
The same research shows that individual therapy when combined with group works more effectively and often in less time in reaching desired treatment outcomes.
“At first when my therapist suggested I join a group I thought, oh here we go, I’m going to sit in a circle with people who are complaining about their lives and I’m just not going to say anything. But I gave it a try and what I found was very different. There is power in a group of people who are mutually supporting each other. My group therapist keeps the structure of the group going so that the exchange is high quality with no judgment, just really helpful support and the opportunity to help others. I have stayed on in my group just for purposes of maintenance and connection and pay it forward.”

Learning Through Shared Perspectives
Beyond simply feeling heard, group therapy offers a unique opportunity to learn from the diverse perspectives of others. Listening to how fellow group members navigate their challenges can provide you with new coping strategies and fresh insights into your own life. It becomes a collaborative space where giving and receiving empathetic feedback is encouraged. Often, the act of offering support to someone else through their journey can be just as empowering and healing as receiving help yourself.
Beyond simply receiving guidance, the collaborative nature of the group creates a unique “social sandbox” where giving and receiving empathetic feedback feels safe rather than threatening. Sharing deeply personal insecurities and receiving warmth instead of judgment actively rewires how individuals relate to others, healing long-standing relational wounds. Furthermore, this dynamic taps into the profound therapeutic power of altruism. When participants offer genuine support to a peer in pain, it pulls them out of their own rumination and restores their sense of self-worth, proving that the act of guiding someone else through their darkness can be just as empowering and deeply healing as being helped yourself.
A Safe Space For Personal Growth
The concept of group therapy as a microcosm of the real world is perhaps its most profound advantage, offering a rare, built-in safety net that everyday life naturally lacks. In the outside world, practicing new ways of communicating, asserting needs, or setting boundaries can feel intensely risky, often carrying the threat of rejection, judgment, or conflict. However, the group functions as a supportive laboratory where those social stakes are temporarily lowered. Under the steady guidance of an experienced therapist, members are encouraged to experiment with vulnerability and assertiveness in real-time. If an interaction becomes clumsy or triggers an emotional reaction, the group is able to pause and process it constructively, transforming what might be an interpersonal conflict outside the room into an invaluable lesson in self-awareness.
This ongoing practice ultimately builds the crucial bridge between the therapy room and everyday life. By consistently navigating different personalities, giving voice to their needs, and forming connections within this structured space, participants actively cultivate the emotional resilience necessary to thrive in their external relationships. The isolation that so often accompanies psychological and emotional pain begins to dissolve, replaced by the profound realization that healing happens in community. Ultimately, group therapy serves as a powerful catalyst for enduring personal growth, proving that when we learn to relate to others in healthier, more authentic ways, we simultaneously learn to heal ourselves.
Current Group Offerings
Integrity Recovery Group for Men
| Facilitator: Daniel Blackwood, LPCC |
| Day & Time: Tuesdays – 12:00PM – 1:00PM (Online) |
|
Description: What is integrity? The original meaning of the word integrity is wholeness. Completeness. All the parts present and connected. Integrity, in the way we use it, means being whole: being the same person in the quiet of your own room as you are in the world; being in contact with your True Self — the full, genuine, unperformed you — rather than the version of yourself you have constructed to survive. Integrity is not something you earn. It is something you return to. This group supports men who seek the deeper part of recovery – anybody can quit patterns or problematic behaviors for a while, but deep and lasting recovery requires self-discovery, skills, support, and a felt sense and understanding of what we mean by surrender. This group, is a confidential circle of men lead by Daniel Blackwood, LPCC that support the growth needed for healing and recovery. All you need to join is an internet connection and a private place to join us from. We welcome you! |
