Mindfulness-Based Somatic Emotional Processing: A Guide for Patients and Therapists
A guide for working with emotions and unprocessed traumas
Now Available: Mindfulness-Based Somatic Emotional Processing (MBSEP) – A Guide for Patients & Therapists
Most of us have been taught to overthink, analyze, judge or push away our feelings with our minds. We struggle with, or against our emotions in a futile attempt to control them or get rid of them. It is a useless and fruitless struggle.
On May 5, 2026, a groundbreaking new resource becomes available, offering a simple and accessible practice for emotional healing and well-being. Developed by Robert Weisz, PhD, and co-authored by Daniel Blackwood, M.A., this book introduces the powerful protocols of Mindfulness-Based Somatic Emotional Processing (MBSEP).
MBSEP provides a method for a healthy relationship with our emotions.
As humans, we are inherently emotional beings. However, we often get stuck in the “thinking mind” – the endless loop of stories, judgments, and explanations for why we feel the way we do.
Weisz and Blackwood reveal the “struggle factor”—the futile resistance we often put up against negative emotions—and show why resisting them only makes them stronger. Accepting and witnessing our emotions as they happen in the body allows us to learn what they have to teach us.
This book is a manual for anyone who is interested in developing a conscious, effective, and respectful relationship with their emotional experiences. Therapists as well as clients will find it useful, approachable, and helpful.
What You’ll Learn in This Book
This isn’t just a theoretical text; it is a practical, step-by-step manual for effective, compassionate emotional regulation and healing.
Inside, you will find:
- How to Apply: The core tools of MBSEP.
- Guidance: Detailed strategies for working through emotional states like anxiety, grief, and anger.
- The Power of Compassionate Attention: Discover how focused, mindful attention to the sensate experience of emotions fosters neuroplasticity, creating new neuronal linkages in the brain and nervous system.
- Case Studies: Learn through the lived experiences of others, drawn from the authors’ decades of clinical therapy practice.
- Integrative Healing: Learn how to combine MBSEP with other therapeutic modalities like RTM, CBT, EMDR and Brainspotting, whether you are a professional therapist or a home practitioner.
“We all have bodies and we all have minds. But how do they relate to each other? And how can we heal ourselves by strengthening that relationship? In this beautiful jewel of a book, Weisz and Blackwood effortlessly synthesize breath and mindfulness practices with sound psychotherapeutic principles in order to resolve disturbances of emotion. An invaluable resource for both lay and professional audiences.”

Minding The Body, Embodying The Mind
Mindfulness-Based Somatic Emotional Processing:
A Guide for Laypersons and Therapists
Why We Wrote This Book:
In our work as psychotherapists, we have found, and have consistently confirmed over the past ten years, that MBSEP offers clients an elegant , accessible, and flexible approach for facilitating effective emotional regulation and for supporting deep, productive emotional processing in counseling and psychotherapy. We also found that MBSEP is a simple and accessible practice for clients and other who want to invest in supporting their ongoing emotional self-maintenance, improving their emotional well-being, and for enhancing their personal growth.
Our target audience for this book was initially the universe of “helping professionals:” counselors, psychotherapists, social workers, and others in the healthcare professions. We also considered that the basic practice of MBSEP incorporates a valuable set of tools for the general reader who is motivated to invest in emotional growth, well-being, and emotional maintenance. After a few months of discussion, during which we considered the alternative of writing two separate books directed at two different populations, we agreed that the book should be made accessible, useful, and understandable to both the lay reader and the helping professional.
Integrity Recovery – Find Your True Self
The Recovery Workbook
For me, as a man who is recovering from the effects of abandonment and decades of co- dependent charading, I find mindfulness to be a powerful way to stay on my path of practicing integrity. Mindfulness is a word from Sanskrit origins, which means awareness. Awareness brings us into the moment, which is the pathway to being well. While this makes practical sense and sounds so good, make no mistake about this, we live in a world that is filled with lack of awareness, that emphasizes external focus and outcome driven processes. The practice of mindfulness (being aware) puts our focus on process, trusting that outcomes will take care of themselves. This greatly contributes to a sense of peace and wellness – to not having to worry about outcomes.
The practice of mindfulness requires no religious or spiritual orientation and at the same time people of all religions, cultures, and spiritual orientation can benefit from it. Some people need a structured orientation to mindfulness, which incorporates meditation as part of the practice. Others need the freedom to create, innovate, and find their own way to practice mindfully. This collective work, “Preparing for Integrity Recovery,” “Integrity Recovery,” and “Practicing Integrity,” is designed to help you discover what works for you.
It is helpful to remember the driving-on-the-road analogy as you go through life. Remembering this analogy will help you to be compassionate and less judgmental with yourself and others. Life is like driving on the road. We are less likely to drive off the road the closer to the middle we are (middle way). In awareness we stay true to our path. When we are adrift or lost in thought (not being mindful) we may go off the road. Sometimes we may just go a little off the road. Other times we may roll into the swamp and need a tow truck.
