Is AI Therapy safe?

With more and more access to AI, many people, especially younger generations, have started using AI in place of a therapist.

Let’s talk about the pros and cons of this.

  1. Lack of genuine empathy
AI can simulate supportive language, but it does not truly feel emotions and it cannot understand the human experience. Therapy relies on empathy, warmth, and emotional connection – this happens between 2 nervous systems that are constantly co-regulating and interacting with each other. People benefit from feeling deeply heard and understood by another human—something AI cannot authentically provide.
  2. Limited understanding of complex situations
Human lives are nuanced. Cultural background, trauma history, personality, current events, individual physical wellbeing and subtle emotional cues all shape mental health. AI systems rely on patterns in data and often oversimplify complex problems or give generic advice that doesn’t fully fit your situation. A therapist is trained to assess the problems bringing you to treatment whether that be anxiety, depression, anger, addiction, couples problems, etc and can guide you to the proper resources in your community, which AI cannot fully do.
  3. Risk in crisis situations
AI tools are not equipped to handle emergencies such as suicidal thoughts, self-harm, or severe psychiatric conditions. They may provide crisis hotline information, but they cannot assess risk the way a trained mental health professional has been trained to do.
  4. Privacy and data security concerns
AI therapy platforms collect highly sensitive personal information. If data is mishandled, stored insecurely, or shared with third parties, users’ privacy is compromised. Even when companies have protections in place, users may not fully understand how their information is used.
  5. No professional accountability
Licensed therapists are bound by ethical codes, professional training standards, and legal responsibilities. AI systems do not carry this same accountability.
  6. Overdependence on technology
Some individuals might rely heavily on AI support instead of building real-world coping skills or seeking human relationships. This could potentially increase isolation rather than reduce it, especially if AI replaces meaningful social or therapeutic connection. We know from recent research that not only is loneliness detrimental to emotional wellbeing, it also has documented negative effects on our physical health. Community is essential to the wellbeing of human beings.

So what are the pros of using AI for therapy?

  1. 24/7 availability
AI tools are available anytime, including late at night or during moments of sudden stress. Unlike traditional therapy, which requires scheduled appointments, AI can provide immediate support when you need to talk through something. But remember that AI is usually programmed to reinforce the beliefs of the user, which means it is likely to tell you what you want to hear.

  2. Greater accessibility
Many people face barriers to traditional therapy, such as cost, location, long waitlists, or stigma. AI-based mental health tools are often more affordable, sometimes free, and accessible from anywhere with internet access, helping reach people who might otherwise receive no support.

  3. Reduced fear of judgment
Some individuals feel embarrassed or anxious about sharing their personal struggles with another person. Talking to AI can feel less intimidating, which may encourage honesty and openness, especially when talking about things that feel vulnerable.

  4. Basic skills
AI can consistently offer suggestions for basic coping strategies, reminders, and structured exercises that can support mental wellbeing, in a more personalized way than other apps and platforms could in the past (assuming you give it accurate prompts).

  5. Early intervention and support
AI can serve as a first step for people who are unsure about therapy. It can help you reflect on emotions, track mood patterns, and learn coping skills.

If you want to use it, AI works best as a supplemental support tool rather than a replacement for human therapists. If you’re already in therapy, talk with your therapist about how to incorporate it into your work.
