Charles Duhigg (you might know him from <\/span>The Power of Habit<\/span><\/i>)<\/span> dives into the science of communication and breaks down exactly why we often miss each other – and how to fix it in his new book. But this isn\u2019t just another book on \u201cHow to talk better.\u201d This is about how to<\/span> truly<\/span><\/i> connect<\/span><\/i>,<\/span> even when conversations feel tense, confusing, or emotionally charged.<\/span> <\/b><\/p>\n

Here are 3 big ideas that come from his new book;<\/b><\/p>\n

There Are 3 Types of Conversations<\/b><\/h2>\n

Duhigg (2024) reveals that every conversation we have falls into one of three categories:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Practical Conversations<\/b>: About getting things done (\u201cDid you pay the bills?\u201d or \u201cWhat\u2019s for dinner?\u201d).<\/li>\n
  2. Emotional Conversation<\/b>s:\u00a0 Focused on feelings, vulnerability, and being heard.<\/li>\n
  3. Social Conversations<\/b>: All about connection, status, belonging, and identity.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The problem? Most of us don\u2019t realize we\u2019re in different types of conversations at the same time. You might be expressing hurt feelings (emotional), while your partner starts giving solutions (practical). Cue: disconnect. Supercommunicators are those magical people who instinctively recognize the type of conversation happening\u2014and match it. The good news? You can learn how to do this too.
